The Road to Termina

by Hyrulian Shaman

As link stepped out of his only home he could feel darkness in the air.  “Hello” said a voice.  Link looked over at his friend Saria and returned the greeting.  “I know your food supply ran out yesterday so I brought you a little something.”  She pulled a basket of fish and bread.  “I walked all the way to Hyrule marketplace to get you this so you better enjoy it.”  Link thanked her and she walked to her home.  Link went inside and had breakfast, saddled Epona and prepared himself for his journey.  A day earlier he had received a letter from the King of Hyrule asking him to deliver an item to the once forgotten land of Termina.  Link had not opened the deer skin bag to see what was inside it.  He thought it would be appropriate to know what he would be delivering.  He walked over to the table in the back of his home and untied the sack.  When he looked inside he saw something that shocked him.  It was a sword with the royal family’s crest on the hilt.  It was made of the finest silver with ancient Hyrulian lettering on the handle.  “So this is what the king wanted you to take eh?”  The owner of the voice was Navi, Link’s guardian fairy.  Link replied with a nod.  Link hung the sword on the side of Epona and put his sack of food on her other side.  He put the saddle on her back, got on, and started riding in the direction of the road that took him to the mysterious land of Termina long ago.  He road for hours until he came upon the leafy cave which he remembered all too well.  He said goodbye to Epona and tied her to a tree on the side of the entrance.  As he entered the cave a slight chill fell upon him and everything got silent.  Rustle rustle.   Link heard a sound coming from the right of the cave.  He walked over to the sound.  It was coming from a little hole in the rocky side of the cave.  He looked inside and found a dead stalphos twitching.  Its body had been mutilated and pinned up against the wall of the cave with spikes of some sort.  Link continued until he found the hole that he must jump down to arrive at the land of Termina.  “Are you ready for this because I wasn’t with you when you went to this place”?  Link nodded.  He was certain he was ready and took a leap of faith.  As the darkness swirled around Link Navi hid in his sack of food on his back.  When he slammed to the ground he smelt the familiar smell of the town square of Termina.  He spotted two big wooden doors and pushed them open.  He did not see what he expected to see.  The square of Termina was completely empty.  He walked over to a door on the right side of the square where he remembered the mayor’s office to be.  When he knocked on the door no one answered.  He tried it again and the curtains opened up and the mayor peeked out of the window and immediately opened the door.  Link was thrown inside and half the townspeople were in the mayor’s office.  “Oh thank the gods, the hero of Termina has come”, said the mayor.  “The Gorons have attacked our city”, said the mayor.  Link nodded.  “Please help us Hero, you are our only hope to make peace with the Gorons.”  Link showed him the sword.  The mayor leaped with joy.  “You have brought us the sword forged by the gods.  I sent a messenger to Hyrule to tell your king that we needed help but he never returned.  This is what you must do.  Take the sword to the Gorons, offer it to them as a peace offering and tell them we are sorry for any inconvenience we have caused them.  Will you do this for us?”  Link nodded his head.  “Thank you!”  Link set off on his journey across the field and up the icy mountain.  As he approached the Goron village he could hear cheering saying, “The Hero of Termina is here!”  Link walked up to the main square and the leader of the Terminan Gorons was standing in the middle of te square.  Link walked up to him and offered him the sword.  “This writing is a peace treaty with the Terminans in the city.  We attacked them because some hunters shot one of our brothers in the leg.  Thanks the gods that they are our allies now.  Thank you Hero of Termina, you have truly saved us from a war.”  Link returned to the city and was praised with gifts and riches.  Then he returned to the cave and saddled Epona.  As he rode home he thought about the battle that could have been fought if he had not delivered the treaty.
