The Great Deku Tree - Ocarina of Time

The Beginning

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time starts with a story about a boy named Link. He is from the Kokiri Forest and is the only one without a fairy. One day, The Great Deku Tree sends Navi the fairy to retrieve Link to help him on a quest, a quest against the forces of evil. Once you have control of Link, walk outside of your house and view the area. Saria will come running up to you and greet you. To be able to go to the Great Deku Tree, you must first collect 40 rupees, so you can buy a shield from the Kokiri Shop. First, go to the Kokiri Training Ground, to the left of Links home. Enter the training ground and find the hole in the wall. Crawl under the opening and continue walking. Walk to the left, right, left, and then right while avoiding boulders to find a treasure chest. Open the chest and you will find the Kokiri Sword. Now exit the way you came and collect more rupees. If you go to Sarias and Midos House you will find rupees and hearts. If you have 40 rupees, go to the Kokiri Shop across from Sarias Home. When there, buy a Kokiri Shield for 40 rupees. Heres a look at the prices for items at the Kokiri Shop:

Deku Nuts (5) - 15 rupeesDeku Stick - 10 rupees

Once you have the Deku Skield, Walk to the left, and you should see Mido blocking the passage to the Great Deku Tree. Equip your sword and shield and talk to him, and he will let you pass through. Defeat the Deku Babas on the way to earn some Deku Sticks and you will find the Great Deku Tree beyond them. The Great Deku Tree will tell you that a curse has fallen on him and he asks you if you are brave enough to enter. Say yes and enter the Great Deku Tree.

Inside the Great Deku Tree

  • Gold Skulltulas to find: 4

Once inside the Deku Tree, walk to the left and you should find a ladder on the wall, climb it. Then walk to the right until you see a treasure chest, open it. Inside there will be a Dungeon Map, now continue walking. You should reach a door, enter the room. Inside will be a Deku Scrub. Reflect the Deku Nuts it shoots with your Deku Shield. If you hit it, it will tell you a tip about rolling off of cliffs. Now continue through the next door that opens. In this room, jump to the platform in the middle of the room and then quickly jump to the other side. Open the treasure chest there and inside will be the Fairy Slingshot.

Now turn around and look up at the wall and you should see a ladder. Shoot the ladder to make it fall down and then jump down and use the ladder to go back the way you came. Now go back to where the treasure chest with the Dungeon Map was. Shoot the 3 Skulltulas on the wall then climb the vines to reach the next level of the Deku Tree. Once on the next level, walk along the path avoiding the large Skulltulas. You will find a room, enter it. Inside, step on the switch to the right to make platforms rise up. Cross the platforms to get to the otherside to get a chest with the Compass in it. Jump down and climb the vines to get back up where you started. Now take a Deku Stick and light it from the flame on the torch. Now light the unlit torch to be able to leave the room. Once outside, defeat one of the skulltulas by shooting them in the back with your Fairy Slingshot. Go over to where the Skulltula was and look down. You will have to jump off, so aim yourself so you hit the center of the web to break it. If successful, get out of the water at the bottom and find a switch on the land and step on it. The switch will reveal a torch. Use a Deku Stick and light it. Now jump across the water with the torch still lit. Make your way over to the web blocking the door. Enter the room, and inside there will be a Deku Scrub. Defeat using your Deku Shield again, and it will tell you how to defeat its brothers up ahead. Remember the sequence 2,3,1 and continue by shooting at the eye switch above the next door. In the next room, dive into the water like Navi says and find a switch. Dive onto it, which will make the water level get lower. Now get out of the water and wait to jump onto the platform on the water to reach the other side. Once on the platform, wait to jump onto the otherside. Go over to the block to the left and push it. You should now be able to climb the block and enter the next room. In the next room, use your Deku Stick to light the two unlit torches. Once that's done, the door to next room will be open. In this next room, walk over to the lit torch and light your Deku Stick. Now walk to the right and try to avoid any Gohma Larvae that might appear. Use the torch to burn the web, and then crawl into the hole. You will now be back in the first room you came to when you fell in the hole. Go over to the left and push the block to make it fall into the water. Now go to the other side of the water and light your Deku Stick from that same torch. Now jump onto the block and go back to where you came in. Use your stick to burn up the web beneath you to fall into another hole. Swim out of the water at the bottom and you will see the Deku Scrub Brothers. Reflect their attacks with your shield in the 2,3,1 order (Middle, Right, Left). Once defeated one Deku Scrub will tell you about Queen Gohma. Now enter into the next room to find Queen Gohma.

Queen Gohma

Queen Gohma.jpg (13055 bytes)    Once inside, look up at the ceiling and you will see the Parasitic Armored Arachnid Queen Gohma. To defeat her, shoot her in the eye with your Fairy Slingshot when her eye is red. Then strike her with your sword using Z-targeting. Gohma will then go back up to the ceiling and hatch some Gohma Larvae. Stop her before she hatches them by hitting her in the eye and making her fall back down. If she hatches the Gohma Larvae, fight them off with your sword by hitting them in the eye. Once you strike Gohma several times with your sword, you should be rewarded a heart container. Walk into the blue light and it will take you back to outside the Great Deku Tree. The Deku Tree will then tell you that a man from a far away desert set this curse on the Deku Tree. The Deku Tree will then entrust you with the Kokiris Emerald and tell you to go to Hyrule Castle to see the Princess of Destiny. The Deku Tree then passes away and Link leaves to go to Hyrule Castle.
