Phantom Hourglass: Multiplayer

By: J-Red A.K.A. Hyrulian King

It's coming. The first DS Zelda game. After several years of waiting, we finally get to see what our patience gives us. While it does use the cartoonish Wind Waker graphics, I think we can expect things from a game that uses a touch screen instead of a controller. Such as a fun and unique multiplayer mode. Battle mode is definitely an innovative way to use this feature. In a capture the flag type- match, one player controls Link, and the other controls three dark nuts. Instead of focusing on combat, though, this multiplayer feature focuses on strategy, in a tag style game. It hosts two players: one to control Link (either red or blue) and the other to control the three dark nuts. The player controlling Link gets to move him around using the stylus. The other player uses a map to set a path for the dark nuts to follow. The objective: collect as many Triforces as possible, and bring them back to your area. The map is set in a maze, reminding us of the old days when we would play Pac-man. The player controlling Link can run around, but by picking up a Triforce, he weighs himself down. And, as you might guess, the bigger the Triforce you pick up, the slower you go. But, if you get it back to your area, you get more points. On the other hand, if the dark nuts catch you, the other player gets to control Link, while you control the three dark nuts. The dark nuts are controlled on a map. The player controlling them draws a route for them to follow, so they can't directly control them. But there are other elements that can add to victory or defeat. The player controlling Link can pick up power ups, which give things like speed boosts, extra defense, etc. etc. The power-ups themselves are scattered throughout the level, and are color coordinated with each player (for example, the red Link uses red power-ups, and vice versa). The player can also destroy the other player's power-ups. But the dark nuts get their own surprises. They can access traps, such as gusts of wind that will blow the player around. The multiplayer sounds fun (the guys at Zelda Guide have yet to get our hands on a demo) and creative. We are definitely looking forward to the new features, and wonderful multiplayer mode.
